Buying a SIM card in Spain as a visitor

• Spanish law requires mobile operators that sell prepaid SIM cards to keep a register with the identity of every customer who buys one.
• The buyer is identified with an identity document; the register records their name, surnames, nationality, and the number and type of the document used.
• Orange says all prepaid lines must, by law, be registered with the details of the person who buys them.
• When you buy an Orange prepaid SIM at a point of sale, the staff take your details there and the line validation is completed on the spot.
• If you buy an Orange prepaid SIM through other outlets such as tobacconists or kiosks, Orange later texts you a link to upload an ID document: a Spanish DNI, a passport or an NIE.
• The ID document must be valid, complete and legible.

Bring your passport: Spanish law requires prepaid SIM buyers to be identified, and buying in an operator's store lets the staff record your ID on the spot.
