What the checker can and can't tell you
Valid means the number fits its country's numbering plan: the right country code, the right number of digits and a range that has been assigned. It does not mean that someone answers it today. A disconnected number can still be valid.
Country and region come from the country code and, where the numbering plan has them, the area code. In the US and Canada the area code gives the state or province. Mobile numbers in most countries have no region.
Line type is mobile, landline, toll-free, premium rate or VoIP where the country uses separate ranges. The US and Canada mix mobiles and landlines in the same ranges.
Original carrier is the operator the range was given to. People can keep their number when they switch, so treat it as a hint.
It does not show who owns the number. That is not part of any public numbering data.
The checks use the numbering data of Google's open-source libphonenumber library, which is updated as countries change their plans. Numbers you check are processed in memory and are not saved or logged.

How do I know if a phone number is valid?
Enter it above. The checker compares the number with the official numbering plan of its country: the country code, the number of digits and the ranges assigned to operators. "Valid" means the number is correctly formed and falls in an assigned range. It does not prove that the line is connected right now.
How can I tell what country a phone number is from?
Look at the country code after the + sign: +44 is the United Kingdom, +234 Nigeria, +91 India. Numbers starting with +1 can belong to the US, Canada or 23 Caribbean and Pacific countries; the three digits after the 1 (the area code) tell them apart. The checker does this for you.
Can this tool tell me who owns a phone number?
No. It shows the country, the region when the numbering plan gives one, the line type and the operator the number was first assigned to. Owner names are not public numbering data, and sites that promise them for free usually sell a paid report.
Is the carrier shown the current carrier?
It is the operator the number range was originally given to. People can keep their number when they switch operators (number portability), so the current carrier may be different. For US and Canadian numbers no carrier is shown for that reason.
Why does a US number show "landline or mobile"?
In the US and Canada, mobile and landline numbers share the same area codes and ranges, so the number alone cannot say which one it is.
What is the E.164 format?
E.164 is the international standard way to write a phone number: a + sign, the country code and the national number, with no spaces or leading zero, for example +442079460018. Most apps, CRMs and SMS services expect this format.
Is a number that passes the check safe to call back?
Not necessarily. Caller ID can be faked, so a call can show a real, valid number that the caller does not own. Be careful with missed calls from unknown international numbers: calling back premium-rate numbers can be expensive.
